Smithfield High School Summer Reading Program
Dear Students and Parents / Guardians: The Summer Reading program is structured so that each student will read two books over the course of the summer, one from a required list and one of his or her own selection. The requirements are as follows: I. Assessment of Book from Required List At the beginning of the school year, all students will complete a written response on one novel from the required list. This assignment (5% of first quarter grade) will be a subjective one (essay) done on the first few days of the new school year. Students are encouraged to complete the attached study guide in preparation for this response. II. Student Selected Text Each student is required to read one additional book (an additional 5% of first quarter grade), which should be chosen by the student with the approval of his or her parent or guardian. A list of suggested titles is provided, but students may also visit the local bookstore or library for additional guidance in selecting a book that is appropriate in terms of both subject matter and reading level. Note: Teachers may deny students credit for using books that are well below a student’s reading level. To document the reading of this book, students may provide a one-page, typed analysis of the plot, character, and their opinion of the book, or offer a creative representation, such as a visual aid, poster, or a CD soundtrack – all accompanied with a short, written explanation -- to support their reading selection. If you have any questions, please call. Area bookstores and local librarians are aware of the summer reading requirements and can be of assistance.
Enjoy the summer!
